Rudy Giuliani Donations Flood In After Trump's Message

Rudy Giuliani has seen a surge in donations for his legal expenses after President-elect Donald Trump urged his supporters to assist him.

The former New York City mayor raised over $10,000 in donations following Trump’s call but still faces a $148 million defamation lawsuit related to his false accusations against two Georgia election workers.

Why It Matters

Last week, Giuliani was held in contempt of court twice in connection with his baseless claims of voter fraud against Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Moss. A Manhattan court ruled that Giuliani failed to provide necessary information regarding his assets, which may be used to cover the defamation costs.

What To Know

To help cover his $148 million legal fees, Giuliani launched an online fundraiser with a goal of raising $250,000. On January 12, Trump, who Giuliani has long supported, urged his followers to contribute, writing on social media: "SAVE RUDY!!!"

Trump’s post coincided with a significant increase in donations, bringing the total amount raised to $166,000. Many donors praised Giuliani for his loyalty to Trump.

On Thursday, Giuliani will appear in a New York trial to determine whether he must forfeit his Palm Beach condo to Freeman and Moss, in addition to a Manhattan apartment he has already been ordered to relinquish.

Several supporters left messages with their donations. One anonymous donor wrote, "I pray that justice is ultimately served for a true American patriot and the savior of NYC. Godspeed Rudy!" Another said, "Mayor, you cleaned up a city and held a nation together allowing us to hold our heads high on the darkest of days. May we return the favor. This lawfare is not right. I hope you feel our love & gain strength through our donations. I am sorry this is happening to you. Hang tough, Mayor. God bless you Rudy & God bless the USA." A third donor, who contributed $500, added, "We know the establishment is trying to send a message to destroy you for telling the truth that you know!! Your integrity is impeccable and they fear you because of your truth! Someday they will have to face the truth!! Thank you Rudy for all you've done and will continue to do. You were the best Mayor New York ever had. Under your leadership, New York was a pleasure to live in! God Bless."

What Happens Next

Giuliani will return to New York on Thursday for his next trial and could also be required to surrender three World Series rings that he claims were given to his son in 2018.
