Michelle Obama Skips Jimmy Carter Funeral: 'Scheduling Conflicts'

Former President Jimmy Carter Honored in Final Farewell Ceremonies

Former First Lady Michelle Obama did not attend former President Jimmy Carter's funeral on Thursday due to "scheduling conflicts," as reported by journalist Jeff Zeleny. Michelle Obama is currently in Hawaii, a location the Obamas often visit during the holiday season.

Carter, the 39th president of the United States, passed away on December 29 at the age of 100. His funeral marks the conclusion of a series of events celebrating his life and legacy. Today’s ceremonies include both public and private funerals in Washington, D.C., and Plains, Georgia, where he will be laid to rest beside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in 2023.

The day began with a service at the Washington National Cathedral, where President Joe Biden, a longtime admirer and early supporter of Carter’s 1976 presidential campaign, delivered the eulogy. Vice President Kamala Harris, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, along with their respective spouses, were in attendance, highlighting Carter's far-reaching influence. President-elect Donald Trump and incoming First Lady Melania Trump were also present.

A spokesperson for Michelle Obama stated, "Mrs. Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from the remarkable former president."

In Plains, Georgia, Carter's remains will be interred during a private ceremony at Maranatha Baptist Church. A U.S. Navy flyover at 5:20 p.m. will honor his service as a Naval officer, a testament to his lifelong commitment to public service.

During a Capitol ceremony earlier this week, Vice President Harris described Carter as “a gifted man who also walks with humility, modesty, and grace.” President Biden, in a heartfelt statement, encouraged Americans to “study Jimmy Carter,” calling him “a man of principle, faith, and humility.”

Carter's legacy as a humanitarian, peacemaker, and advocate for democracy resonates far beyond his presidency. As the ceremonies conclude in Plains, Georgia, his modest final resting place reflects the values he held dear throughout his life.
